In greek mythology, Aphrodite is the goddess of love and beauty. According to Homer she is a daughter of Zeus and Dione, according to Hesiod she was born from the sea foam. The roman goddess Venus was at the beginning a goddess of fertility and only over time became the goddess of love and beauty.

Aphrodite loved and was loved by many gods and mortals. Among her mortal lovers, the most famous was perhaps Adonis.
